Six new schools & orphanages now have clean water!

It never ceases to amaze us how much our Ethiopia team can accomplish!

Within the past few months, six schools and orphanages have received permanent access to safe drinking water through Splash's water filtration systems--benefiting over 11,000 kids, teachers, and staff, instantly.

On top of all this, the Splash team has been presenting findings from a citywide survey to audiences ranging from Ethiopia’s federal and district government officials to leaders in the water and sanitation sectors. We've also engaged over 300 school directors in direct dialogue to build support for our WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) program. Overall, Splash's work has been so well received that we were invited to sit on the WASH Steering Committee for the Addis Ababa Education Bureau!

Now, our team is preparing to install water filtration systems at 9 additional sites--putting us well on our way toward our goal to give 30,000 kids in Addis clean water by the end of the year!

Last week, Splash's headquarter office hosted a staff member from our Ethiopia field team. He said to us, "We want to do more projects so more kids can have clean water!" It was music to our ears.

Will you help us fund more water projects in Ethiopia?? Our team is able and ready, and thousands of kids are waiting!

From all of us at Splash, Thank you!

Marching toward our goal: Water, sanitation, and hygiene for 400,000 kids in India!

Since 2012, Splash has been working to ensure all kids in Kolkata have clean water, clean hands, and clean toilets at school. In three short years, Splash has earned the reputation as one of the top quality water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) implementers in the country. Already, Splash is serving 26,778 children at 27 schools, 3 orphanages and 2 shelters in Kolkata. And we're just getting started!

Our long-term goal is bold yet attainable: WASH-in-School programs at all 2,000 public schools in Kolkata by 2020 -- benefitting more than 400,000 of the city's most vulnerable children.

While we have only just begun implementing our programs, we have made tremendous strides toward securing the partnerships necessary for reaching this goal. Now, Splash is in a prime position to begin leveraging our local partnerships to help us prove scale (reach 100% coverage of Kolkata public schools) and produce a replicable model for other Indian cities as well -- so kids in other mega-cities in India can have clean water, clean hands, and clean toilets too.

Ambitions are running high in India this year as we look to:

  1. Implement WASH-in-Schools programs in 63 Kolkata new schools for the benefit of 14,860 children;
  2. Solidify partnerships that support our activities in sanitation, policy advocacy, and knowledge management; and
  3. Refine our hygiene model to ensure it’s best-in-class prior to the major push toward 100% coverage planned for 2017.

There is much work ahead. We thank you for helping us get this far and hope to see you at the finish line!

Taking a Coalition Approach to Ensure Sustainability in Ethiopia

While project implementation is always a primary focus for Splash, our attention is turning to efforts that will also strengthen the local capacity and shift the cultural norms that drive behavior around water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in Ethiopia.

Since 2008, Splash has been building a strong, local team in Addis Ababa, collaborating with the Addis Ababa Education Bureau and other regional actors to strengthen partnerships and align goals with existing government priorities and resources. While keeping our ethos intact and our vision of ensuring clean water, clean hands, and clean toilets at every public school in Addis Ababa, Splash has been honing in on strategic planning for local capacity building, sustainability, and exit.

Our capacity building strategy has been creating local jobs and enabling local owners to learn how to maintain and repair the modern filtration technology introduced by Splash. In Ethiopia, Splash projects are developing the technical skills of plumbers, builders, teachers, school administrators, and other local partner agencies. In addition, our projects are requiring schools to improve financial management practices for ongoing monitoring and maintenance of WASH infrastructure.

Confirming local buy-in has been central to our sustainability strategy. We've been working closely with school administrators and local governmental officials every step of the way to verify our WASH solutions are contextually practical and culturally appropriate.

We’ve learned that no single organization can or should be tasked with the full undertaking of this project. Taking a "coalition approach" allows Splash to secure strategic partnerships that establish long-term financial management of all WASH projects, ensuring the infrastructure we install today will remain functional and well maintained for generations of kids into the future.

Splash is immensely grateful for the collaborative support of our partners and the astounding generosity of our donors as we work every day to ensure kids in Ethiopia have safe water today, tomorrow, and forever.

Thank you for giving clean water, clean hands, and clean toilets to kids in Ethiopia. Thank you for giving to Splash!
