CAMP IMANI 2018 is Almost Here!

Dear Friends and Supporters of Imani House,

With the start of spring, parents are already applying for a free space at CAMP IMANI! Summertime is for children to have fun, make friends and explore, yet many families served by Imani House are unable to afford costly camp fees. Children are instead left to play in the streets or remain indoors with the TV while their peers benefit from exciting summer programs.

Every child deserves the fun and safe summer camp experience provided by CAMP IMANI. We have seen marked improvements in the behavioral and social development of the children in our programs. Thanks to your support, CAMP IMANI continues to offer a full 5-day a week, 6-week long day camp for children in Kindergarten to 5th grade at PS282 in Brooklyn.

Everyday at CAMP IMANI, children engage in performing arts, explore their city and bond with friends. Our Camp provides opportunities for students to express themselves through spoken word, African dance and drumming, steel pan, archery, arts & crafts, and develop their skills in literacy, science, and team building. This year, we will also provide math tutoring for children who have not passed the state mathematics test. Exciting and educational field trips are planned for the American Museum of Natural History, Bronx Zoo, Liberty Science Center, Coney Island, and Sesame Place.

Through your continued giving, 120 deserving children can access these amazing and enriching opportunities AT NO COST to their hard-working families.

Please also join us for our annual Walk-to-Live event on June 2nd, a walkathon dedicated to raising awareness of childhood obesity and equipping families with skills to lead a healthy lifestyle.

With summer quickly approaching, we hope you keep Imani House in mind in your giving. Together we can make a difference in these children’s lives.

Warm wishes,

Bisi Ideraabdullah, Executive Director

Good News: An Update on our Health Workshops in Liberia

Health Manual Workshop led by a trained instructor
Health Manual Workshop led by a trained instructor

We hope this message finds you well in the new year!

Thus far, 2018 has brought new opportunities for our public health work in Liberia. Last year’s publication, the Imani House Liberian Women’s Health Manual, is driving our health education programs at our clinic and other community organizations throughout Liberia. Our wonderful group of grassroots women utilize the Manual to provide instruction on topics including health, sanitation, nutrition, and human rights.

Our workshops have grown to serve 119 participants at five different locations, including our clinic. Every Wednesday, community members engage in group health discussions led by one of our trained instructors. Topics range from preventing the spread of germs and illnesses to the risks of STDs and AIDS. Students share that they feel “passionate about the program,” and find the weekly talks are “exciting” and have “added value to their lives.”

“Thank you Imani House for teaching us about how we can help our family to stay health. Today’s training has raised my awareness that cleaning our home helps us stay health.”

- student of Liberian Women’s Health workshop

Those who attend our workshops leave feeling inspired to share what they’ve learned with their family members and neighbors. Many are asking Imani House to organize the same workshop in their own community! Such positive responses remind us of the joy of knowledge and how public education can impact an entire community.

We are particularly excited to share that our Health Manual Workshops will soon expand to secondary schools in Liberia! Working in high schools will help us connect with young people and equip them with the knowledge and skills to care for their health and safety.

In the coming months, we hope to continue improving the health of Liberian communities by building latrines and water stations. One student of the health workshop shares, “We don’t have a latrine in our community. So, when our children toilet, we just throw across the street. But today I have learned that throwing toilet can always bring flees back to the community and these flees can touch our food and make us sick when we eat such food.” We invite you to continue your support of Imani House in Liberia and contribute to building vital latrines and sanitation stations.

Your support of our work is tremendously appreciated. We thank you for your continued support!

Sincerely,

Bisi Ideraabdullah

Support 7 Weeks of Full-Day Summer at CAMP IMANI

Drumming to the Beat with Steelpan
Drumming to the Beat with Steelpan

Here at Imani House, the start of a new year means planning is underway for another unforgettable CAMP IMANI and Walk-to-Live! Summer for middle and upper class families is usually a time when children are sent away to exciting camps with music, athletics, fun and learning.  In contrast, most of the children Imani House serves come from families who could never afford summer camp or the type of specialized instructors IHI provides.  They are instead left to play in the streets or stay inside with the TV as a companion.

At IMANI HOUSE we believe all children deserve to play, build friendships, and learn new skills. Thanks to your support, last year CAMP IMANI and our after-school programs supported over 500 underserved children in Brownsville at PS150, the poorest neighborhood left in all of NY, and in South Brooklyn at PS282.

Please Join hands with us to provide a quality Summer Camp experience to these fine children. With your support we'll also be able to celebrate our annual Walk-to-Live on June 2nd, a walkathon dedicated to raising awareness of childhood obesity. Help us give them the opportunity for greatness, the opportunity to see another side of life.

Through your generosity these special children are able to access this holistic camp FREE of charge. They will receive an amazing assortment of fun filled activities in an enriching, secure environment.

Our full-time Summer Camp provides exciting trips, music, dance, karate, steel pan, archery, chess, arts and crafts, leadership development and trips galore. CAMP IMANI is open five days a week for a full 7 weeks of summer.

CAMP IMANI helps improve their outlook on life. Studies have shown that a happy child is more likely to succeed, have high self-esteem, develop their leadership abilities and be more willing to help others.  We can make a difference. We have seen marked behavioral and social development improvements in the children who attend our program

Summer is quickly approaching, we hope you keep Imani House in mind when you think of your giving. We appreciate your continued support.

Warm wishes,

 Bisi Ideraabdullah, Executive Director
