MMW Volunteers Continue to Change Patient Lives

Rebuilding the Clinic in Chanauti
Rebuilding the Clinic in Chanauti

We want to thank all the generous donors and sponsors who have helped us tremendously since the Earthquake last year. So far we have raised almost $10,000 towards clinic supplies in Chanauti. We have continued our fundraising for the clinic rebuilding both online and with our annual event. This September we had a wonderful dinner hosted by the talented and giving architecture duo, Lisa and Ron. Guests were treated to tours of their eco-designed home while they bid on enticing Silent Auction items and contributed generously to the Live Auction items we need for the new clinic in Chanauti. As you will recall, our clinic was destroyed in the earthquake, leaving a mound of rubble in it’s wake. Only one room, which had been designed by a local architect who had studied in Norway was left standing. We have since commissioned that same architect to design plans for the new earthquake-proof clinic, already erected in it’s place. We are so pleased to announce that the structure of the first two levels has been completed and the ground floor will soon be ready for use! Even more than ever you can see your hard-earned dollars in action with this clinic.

We continue to work towards completing the inside of the clinic with drywall, plaster, electrical, doors, and finishes, as well as the construction of the third level of the building and expect that the additional work will cost another $36,000 with materials and labor. These levels are just as important as the ground floor as they will provide restrooms, offices, a second medical ward, laboratory, meeting room, kitchen and staff room, as well bedrooms for the hard-working visiting volunteer acupuncturists and doctors who will contribute greatly to the health and well-being of the patients we serve. Please see the link to the architectural plans as well as current pictures of the space. It is very exciting to see this dream become a reality for MMW, and most importantly, the people of Chanauti.

As we wait in eager anticipation of the completions of the new space, our tireless volunteers continue to journey far from home to Nepal to serve our patients. Most recently, Mason has been treating patients, sometimes as many as 50 or more in a day. Bonnie has gone for her second trip to serve in a supervisory role (while I continue to stay home with my one-year old son) which has both inspired and given Mason the assistance that he needs in clinic. We are so grateful to them both and moved by their dedication and service. Both of these volunteers and all those who go to Nepal for MMW give up their work and income here in the U.S. and Europe to give to those whose needs still remain unheard in their own country. Estimates say that between 4 and 8 billion dollars in aid has gone to the country of Nepal for the earthquake which happened 18 months ago and yet the government has not yet given ONE SINGLE DOLLAR to the people themselves to rebuild homes, schools and clinics. Sadly, it is up to us to do this work. Again, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us to do it. This Thanksgiving I was most grateful for this opportunity to provide homes, a medical clinic, care, support, and love to a group of people I know so desperately need it and who are just as desperately grateful for this assistance. On giving Tuesday, please consider a donation to MMW towards the completion of our clinic. We are grateful for you!

Chanauti Clinic Update

Concrete preparation for the 2nd floor of clinic!
Concrete preparation for the 2nd floor of clinic!

Thanks to your amazing support, construction on the new healthcare facility is continuing with success! They have begun to prepare for the second floor of the clinic, and we have a volunteer in Chanauti who gets to see all the progress.

Mason describes the beginning of his service: "Two weeks into my trip and I could not be happier. I feel right at home in beautiful Chanaute, and have been welcomed in by so many new friends and family. Clinic has ramped up this past week (20 patients yesterday and 19 today) as word has spread that acupuncture has returned! My Nepali is slowly improving thanks to the help of many, and I spend my afternoons going on walks and house hopping, as locals are always eager to invite me in for some milk tea. Very much looking forward to the next two months in this wonderful part of the world."

Update at Chanauti Clinic

A Nepali villager welcomes our new volunteer!
A Nepali villager welcomes our new volunteer!

Our newest MMW volunteer has just arrived in Chanauti to begin treating patients!

Thanks to your generous donations, Mason was able to bring a replenishing amount of needles, herbs, and other clinic supplies to fill the temporary clinic he will be working in. Across the "street" he is watching as the new medical facility is being built, and where the new clinic will be held.

"Two weeks into my trip and I could not be happier. I feel right at home in beautiful Chanauti, and have been welcomed in by so many new friends and family." Stay tuned to the blog site to read about Mason's experience in Nepal!

We could not continue this journey to provide additional healthcare to the village of Chanauti without your incredible help.
