UK Executive Director (Interim)

We are looking for an experienced leader to join GlobalGiving’s London based team as the Interim UK Executive Director to provide leadership for our UK team of eight (most of whom are based in our London office near Shoreditch High Street) and work with our global colleagues based mostly in Washington DC, USA. This is a maternity cover position.

GlobalGiving in the UK offers a digital fundraising platform (GlobalGiving.org) for donors to give and nonprofits to raise funds online and access tools and resources to strengthen their skills. We work with companies on employee engagement and giving programmes that contribute wider impact and provide a critical source of revenue. And we engage in thought leadership across topics such as philanthropy, technology for good and systems change for community-led development.

During 2020, a core strategic objective is to develop a strong Business Partnerships strategy (including a well-defined plan, service-offerings, pricing and prospect pipeline development). We are particularly keen to hear from you if you have experience in corporate partnership strategy and business planning. A passion for digital solutions, community-led changemakers, partnership building and creative approaches to social change is a must.

You’ll guide and support our small UK based management team and provide input into global strategies and processes with regular check ins with the Global CEO as well as leading the governance and operations of the UK registered charity together with the UK Trustee Board.

We are looking for someone who is flexible, steady and able to accelerate progress on defined projects. You should be eager to support a small team to bring their best work with energy and expertise as well as add your knowledge and experience to key strategic initiatives, particularly in the development of our corporate business partnerships strategy.

Job Title: Interim UK Executive Director (maternity cover)

Reporting to: GlobalGiving UK Trustee Board Chair and Global CEO

Responsible for: GlobalGiving UK (charity number 1122823) including a small team based in London, UK with three direct reports: Programmes Manager, Partnerships Manager and Operations Manager.

Contract Duration: This is a fixed-term temporary maternity-cover contract, the termination of which ties in with the return to work of the original post-holder, unless the contract has terminated earlier for any reason. Ideal start from early/mid February 2020.

Hours of Work: Full time position (37.5 hours per week) with normal hours of work 9.00am to 5.30pm. However, the job may require longer hours from time to time. Alternative patterns of work or a small adjustment to working hours (with commensurate adjustments to salary and other benefits on a pro rata basis) will be reasonably considered.

Location: Normal place of work will be GlobalGiving’s London office: Brick Lane, E1 5SA. The post-holder may be expected to travel for limited periods in the UK or abroad.

Key Responsibilities

As Interim UK Executive Director, you’ll support the UK team to track and achieve organisational goals for 2020. You’ll provide steady leadership during the maternity leave period, ensuring the smooth running of the UK charitable entity as well as interacting with the global leadership team. Key responsibilities are highlighted below:

  • Business Partnerships and Funding:
    • Develop a solid multi-year business partnerships strategy including an operational plan, service-offering, pricing and marketing approach
    • Build a strong pipeline of company leads working through your networks and prospecting, working with the Partnerships Manager
    • Develop a fundraising strategy for 2021 and beyond for programme and research initiatives, working with the Programmes Manager
  • Leadership and Governance:
    • Provide strong leadership working with the UK management team to maintain excellent internal communications and coordination, guiding staff on our mission and values, and keeping a strong organisation culture of collaboration, empathy and drive to succeed
    • Attend relevant sector meetings to profile GlobalGiving’s work, present and network
    • Represent GlobalGiving’s UK work at executive leadership meetings, contribute to global planning and react to required operational changes
    • Be responsible for, and advise Trustees on, strategy implementation, planning, performance, finance health and other key governance areas
    • Support the Operations Manager to produce quarterly documentation
    • Prepare for and attend UK trustee board and global board meetings (which are each typically once a quarter)
  • Team Management and Strategy:
    • Guide the implementation of 2020 strategy and agreed work plans, in partnership with the management team, including tracking and review of key performance indicators, review and setting quarterly objectives and key results (OKRs) and ensuring goals are successfully met
    • Support the review of performance and facilitate annual goal setting for 2021
    • Provide supportive line management with professional development support, holding team to account on targets and practical support
  • Finance and Operations:
    • Ensure smooth operations including office, insurance, policies are kept up to date working with Operations Manager
    • Manage key areas of business risk, namely funding, operational and reputation risk
    • Ensure the organisation acts within all relevant statutory and contractual obligations, including those set by the Charity Commission, Companies House and HMRC
    • Manage organisational HR including recruitment, induction and ongoing management
    • Oversee the monthly financial processes, working with Operations Manager
    • Ensure the annual audit process is concluded effectively

You’ll need to be willing to fulfill any other duties reasonably requested by the UK Board.

Person Specification

We know that talent comes from anywhere and welcome applicants with varied backgrounds. Given this is an interim role, we think someone with the following qualities will be able to jump in and make a difference right away:

Experience & Knowledge

  • Experienced leader of a values-driven organisation, with 10+ years experience in senior positions with experience in governance, board support, operations and financial management
  • Excellent track record of developing corporate partnership strategies, winning new business and increasing income for an organisation in a charitable and/or social impact setting including meeting five and six figure annual income targets
  • A willingness to use professional networks to champion GlobalGiving and support the development of a strong corporate sales pipeline
  • Experience and comfort working collaboratively with a small team and with colleagues based remotely (most remote colleagues are based in our Washington, DC office)
  • Good understanding of social impact organisations and a passion to support community-led change through innovative funding approaches (particularly from the perspective of a funding intermediary if possible)
  • A passionate belief in the mission of GlobalGiving, the vision to help us advance it, and commitment to our core values
  • Experience in an interim leadership position or maternity cover is highly desirable

  • Superb relationship builder with excellent interpersonal skills, able to build productive trusted partnerships with colleagues and external partners (especially funding partners)
  • A supportive, coaching and empowering management style as well as ability to provide direction and feedback to support professional growth of the team and ensure goals are met
  • Excellent foresight and an ability to identify opportunities and obstacles ahead and proactively work with colleagues to build and course correct
  • Able to move smoothly between strategy, planning and delivery having worked in a small team environment and happy to get stuck into ‘doing’
  • A credible communicator and excellent presenter

Benefits

Salary: Up to £60,000 per annum pro-rated

Annual Leave: 25 days per year annual leave (pro-rated) and UK public holidays.

Pension: Enrolment with pension scheme (5% employer contribution) following successful three month probation period.
