Board Member - GlobalGiving UK

UK

Introduction to GlobalGiving

GlobalGiving is an innovative organisation that is transforming aid and philanthropy, with an aim to rebalance power and decision making so that communities are in the lead of change. GlobalGiving’s ability to innovate at scale is underpinned by its financially self-sustaining business model, and collaborative grant-funded work.

Established in 2002 in the USA as a nonprofit foundation, GlobalGiving launched the first global fundraising platform, supporting community-led nonprofit organisations by connecting them to donors and other funders.

GlobalGiving UK was established in 2006 as a registered charity in England and Wales with the aim of extending the visibility, reach and impact of the GlobalGiving mission by mobilising resources and support for nonprofits from a UK base.

Although GlobalGiving UK is an independent charity, it operates an integrated governance and operating structure with GlobalGiving Foundation.

As GlobalGiving celebrates its twentieth-year anniversary this year, over $600 million has been donated by donors to date supporting over 30,000 nonprofit projects in 175 countries across the world.

Opportunity

In 2022, we will recruit one or two new members to our UK Trustee Board to support us at a critical stage in the organisation’s growth. Due to the close relationship with our US sister organisation GlobalGiving Foundation, the new board members will also be required to join the global board. Both boards meet once a quarter.

Our current UK board chair will be leaving us this year after nearly 7 years supporting our work and we will be looking to one of the new trustees to take on this position by the beginning of 2023.

Knowledge and Experience

Our board members should have a passion to transform the effectiveness of aid and philanthropy to eliminate the systemic barriers hindering bottom-up, community-led, change.

One of our primary goals for the next three years is to grow brand recognition with Corporate and Major Donor prospects across the UK and Europe, enabling us to increase our impact with our global nonprofit partners and to grow our UK operations. Therefore an understanding of either market would be extremely helpful

Members of the Board of Directors of GlobalGiving and GlobalGiving UK are fully committed and dedicated to GlobalGiving’s mission. With this quality as a basis for consideration, the following is a list of desired characteristics that all candidates to the Board should have:

  • Commitment to the organisation, demonstrated by attendance at Board meetings
  • Prior nonprofit board experience (ideally)
  • Integrity, openness and honesty
  • The ability to think critically with the future in mind
  • Respect and support diversity of thought and experience
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to collaborate with others
  • Discretion regarding the confidential nature of information shared with/by the board
  • A desire to share GlobalGiving within one’s sphere of influence and a willingness to be involved in supporting fundraising efforts.

After a review of the strengths of the current Board, and in consideration of GlobalGiving’s strategic plan and GlobalGiving UK’s growth aspirations, the organisation's co-CEOs and board members have identified desired characteristics for potential new members. The ideal candidate(s) should have relevant experience or knowledge in the following areas:

  • Strong knowledge and experience in charity governance, ideally from previous experience on board of a charity registered in England and Wales
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the global board (understand the position of this board as a subsidiary of the global governance board)
  • Knowledge and experience of fundraising, business development and/or philanthropy
  • Market-relevant perspectives to help steer regional strategy
  • An understanding of and passion for our mission (could come from any sector)
  • Creative thinking about framing, communication and messaging in a primarily digital media world
  • Strong appreciation of and ability to support executive team on charity finances (but not specific finance expertise)
  • Be able to appreciate and apply a Race, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion lens in discussions
  • Appreciation of people management issues from experience managing teams (but not specific HR expertise)
  • Might be willing to serve as a spokesperson in special circumstances

Candidates should have a track record as an engaged board member. We are actively seeking greater diversity among Trustees and are especially interested in hearing from applicants whose background is reflective of the work we do.

Meetings are offered in-person in London, or remotely and usually in the afternoons or early evening, therefore we welcome applications from qualified candidates who are able to attend meetings held within a GMT timezone.

“Everyone here is passionate about their work, incredibly smart, and genuinely kind. After having worked for a major consulting firm, it's so great to have a job where I know what I'm doing is making the world a better place. [GlobalGiving is the] only company that I've seen that actually lives their values and has them as a meaningful part of their day-to-day operations. It's a breath of fresh air!”
