Money In The Farm

For many years, Kano in Nyando county was synonymous with nice, but now they barley is not the identity of place, horticulture has overtaken it threatening rice farming. George Otieno Obat who comes from Alara village attempted horticultural farming and hes really upgrade his living standards. He grows watermelons, tomatoes, butternuts and a variety of vegetables. He loves these new crops and can work in his farm even pest mid-day. He owns a 8 acre he plants watermelon, to irrigate his beloved watermelons and vegetable, he gets waste water from Ahero rice irrigation scheme and grow rice as well, but he says horticulture is lucrative because he earns better from it than rice farming. Just recently he harvested 13 tonnes of watermelons which he sold to Nairobi, Nakuru and Kisumu. One acre of land can produce 20 tonnes which is sells at Kshs. 18 at the farm gate. he believes that his watermelon business will reward him greatly.
