Improving Water And Sanitation

The community of esikulu is densely populated with approximately 400000 people. The main occupation of these people is farming of staple food. The villagers of the community addressed problems of food in security, poor environment and low level of income among most of the house holds. Through awareness raising by the local organisation which was formed a few years ago, was addressing the issue of lacking latrines and safe water for drinking in the community. Those who attended the public barazas were mostly women and youth. The idea of improving the environment was felt a big and important issue. Every participant had an interest of applying the principles acquired from the meetings. Through the same organization many village communities were formed to spare head the effort of implementing the idea. All the villagers were mobilized and stepped in to dig pit latrines, dish rakes, good kitchen, improved hygiene, tree planting and raising kitchen gardens and water treatment. presently 10 springs have protected and well managed. people's health improved without an attack by cholera, bilihazia etc.
