Distributing potato seedlings as a in-between crop

Distributing potato seedlings as a in-between crop
100 kg of potatoes as seed stock was delivered and distributes in the village as requested by the community. As with beans, potatoes can be planted in the fallow rice paddies because they mature before the next rice planting season starts. This is the first time that this variety of potatoes has been introduced to Fiarenana. (view small | med | large | orig)

Beans a great crop for the "in-between time"

Beans a great crop for the "in-between time"
Bean seeds were delivered to both villages, Fiadanana and Fiarenana. With s short growing cycle the villagers wanted to plant beans as an in-between crop in rice paddies right after the rice harvest. As great 'nitrogen fixers' beans could prove very beneficial for the rice paddies, besides providing another great protein source to eat. (view small | med | large | orig)

Coffe seedlings grwoing in Fiarenana's nursery

Coffe seedlings grwoing in Fiarenana's nursery
As intended the once functioning nursery has been revitalized and the former gardener in Fiarenana has been hired by Zahana to tend to the seedlings until they are big enough for transplanting. The goal is that every family starts growing more coffee, so the have some for sale. To date, while they already are growing coffee successfully, all of it is consumed in the village. Rice bought by Zahana for the Seed Fund

Rice bought by Zahana for the Seed Fund
Rice is the food #1 people consume. As stated before, farmers normally sell their rice right after harvest when trucks roam the countryside offering cash for rice. With the lure of fast money, farmers are tempted to sell all their harvest, keeping only the bare minimum they need to eat, not saving enough seed for the next planting season. To counteract this trend Zahana bought 2 tons of rice. (view small | med | large | orig)

Zahana's rice seeds in the storage building
Zahana bought the rice with two goals in n mind: 1) Have affordable rice to be used for the school food for the children. 2.) The additional rice will serve as a micro-credit seed fund (literally) where farmers can borrow for the next harvest should they fall short, come planting season next year.
