Summary
Suicide rate in Lithuania is one of the highest in the world. Youth Line is overwhelmed.
We plan to sustain our volunteer force by training 10 people to provide emotional support by phone and e-mail. In two years, the new volunteers will take at least 1800 calls and help over 500 youths who are considering suicide.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Lithuania is leading the world in suicide rate. Over 1000 people die by suicide every year. Based on World Health Organization guidelines, we estimate that there are 20,000 suicide attempts annually.
Youth Line is the only source of free emotional support for most of the country's young people. Our volunteers take about 2000 calls a year from people considering suicide, yet this is only a fraction of support that is required.
How will this project solve this problem?
The new volunteers will help hundreds of people to back away from the edge of suicide.
Potential Long Term Impact
By offering support for those at risk, we reduce emotional, social and economical damage that suicide causes for the society.
Project Message
I can recommend Youth Line as a reliable organisation with the clear and very important mission.
