Summary

The Project is aimed at empowering 40 young people to lean on agriculture for sustainability. Its also going to boost the income level especially the component of Sustainable Market Gardening. Young people are gradually leaving agriculture to the elderly which is one of the reason for food shortage. NYDO has earmarked areas in agriculture that has been welcomed by some young people. If achieved, this will reduce other crime wave due to unemployment as this will create much employment.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

There is high rate of unemployment that keeps rising, dependability promiscuity, banditry, cyber crime due to poverty. Young people are being exploited in various job sites. High tax rates by the government is scaring them from starting up small businesses and have put some out of the business. Agriculture which requires low qualitative input to realize high qualitative out put is best for the young people at this time. Market gardening has only 3 months for harvest.

How will this project solve this problem?

the 40 identified young people will be the pioneer beneficiaries of the pilot project. The two project components; Poultry husbandry & pig farming and high yield sustainable market gardening, have been shared between the 40 stakeholders who were identified in a young people talk-show meeting organized on the 14/11/2012. Due to the limited financial constraints, and despite the large number of request from more young people. NYDO limited this pilot phase to 40 in order to have a high impact

Potential Long Term Impact

This project will be a long term sustainability project in that it does not require high capital. Only small quality inputs are needed to realize high quality yield. Also, the community will benefit from the project in that they will be the secondary beneficiaries. Malnutrition related illnesses will reduce. its also going to play the food security role in the various communities.
