In South Africa and Rwanda, many women face a lack of educational opportunity. This project is building leaders through providing higher education scholarships. In return for a college scholarship the young women participate in community service, mentoring, tutoring, leadership, entrepreneurship & financial literacy training, and commit to giving one year of tuition back into the project. This project currently serve 15 women in South Africa and Rwanda and hope to double its impact in 2013.
The unemployment rate for youth in South Africa exceeds 50% and the overall situation for women across the continent is much bleaker. Africa falls behind in closing the gender gap in education. The link between educating women and strengthening the economy is strong. Research also shows that when women earn income, they will reinvest approximately 90% of it back into their communities (World Bank). For every year a girl stays in school, her earning potential increases by 10-20% (World Bank).
This project addresses the gender gap in education by providing under-served women the opportunity to attend university. This project has a strong model that requires students to give back to their communities through community service and also reinvestment in the Scholarship Program. To all the students around the world fighting for an education, we say, "Persevere. Don't give up. The world needs your voices."
We envision a future where young people around the world are equipped to become leaders, reduce poverty, and transform their communities from the inside out. Together we can empower the next generation to reach their potential as leaders committed to the growth and development of their countries.
Through the reinvestment model, this project has the potential to be financially sustainable in future years as graduates give 1 year of their scholarship back into the program for future students.
