Reading Center for 188 students in Jamaica

Shashamane Sunrise strongly believes in the education and empowerment of youth. It is for this reason that we continuously place much effort into providing adequate educational facilities and opportunities to the different schools we help across the globe. One such school is the Windsor Forest Primary School which is located in a predominantly poor farming community in eastern Jamaica.  Not much emphasis is placed on the education of children residing in Windsor Forest. This is because most of the adult population is uneducated and apart from farming, relies primarily on income generated from other skilled professions such as masonry, shop keeping and dressmaking. With such professions being the major source of income, the community lacks substantive financial support and consequently is unable to develop those institutions that are instrumental for sustainable communal development such as education.

Shahsamane Sunrise previously helped to complete an actual concrete structure of a Reading Resource Room for Windsor Forest Primary and both the chidlren and staff have relayed to us their overwhelming gratitude. With that done, our main aim now is to raise funds to complete and furnish this Resource center so that the students can use it to improve their education. The school desperately needs computers, desks, chairs and books as the teachers are unable to attend to the learning needs of the current 188 students in the six classrooms. We want to complete the learning resource/study room so that teachers can take time to address the varying learning needs of the students. We also intend to improve education at the school by providing computers and other e-learning devices which will elevate the quality of education.

Shashamane Sunrise trusts that the improvement in educational standards will ultimately alleviate the quality of life of the entire community. With the provision of a solid educational foundation, students at Windsor Forest Primary will be able to excel academically and explore diverse career options.  With lucrative jobs, they will be able to assist their families and community members who were not formally educated.  By giving these students a Reading Room, we hope to also give them the opportunity to not only dream big dreams but the opportunity to ensure that these dreams come true.
