A collaborative online map of POIs and streets within slums from Rio created to ensure visibility to initiatives and structures existing in poor areas usually only known for its poverty and violence.
The official online geography doesn’t include poor areas. The maps produced to represent slums only highlights negative aspects as violence and inform which areas should be avoided. Wikimapa aims reducing social depths by creating a new geography and stimulate content production by residents that becomes actors of social change. Project uses basic technologies to create real impact on peoples lives including unregistered portions of the cities where low-income people study, work, walk and live.
Through a wiki based system integrating a mobile app with website. In 5 slums from Rio a young resident uses a GPS enabled phone as tool for inserting information about offered services, historic data and audiovisual registry of each place mapped.
150,000 residents from 5 slums benefits from Wikimapa. Over 700 registered users engaged on building a new virtual geography already entered 1285 POIs, 85 streets. Anyone can help us build this new reality and influence the access to citizenship.
Wikimapa has the clear vision to bring value added to the low-income groups. Wikimapa does what Brazil, and the world, needs - to contribute to the great wealth distribution.
