We continue to feed seniors in the downtown Portland area every weekend. Between July 1 and October 31, 2010 we fed six percent more seniors than the same time period in 2009. These seniors are the most vulnerable of all the clients who come into our centers throughout the metropolitan area. Many live in one room apartments or hotel rooms without cooking facilities. They dine regularly at our Elm Court Center Monday through Friday and would have no other access to hot food on weekends if our center was not open. In addition to the meal, seniors have a place to gather to meet with others, drink coffee, read the paper, shoot the breeze. The center also has a large screen tv for seniors to watch sports or movies or local news. No other organization provides this service for seniors. If we were not open on the weekends, downtown seniors would have nowhere to go and no place to eat. Our limited federal funding does not cover the cost of operating on the weekends so we rely 100 percent on donations to keep this program running. We are very grateful to all the donors who support Elm Court Weekend Meals.
