The Elm Court Weekend Meal Program is an ongoing program for Loaves & Fishes Center. It operates out of our Elm Court Center in downtown Portland, Ore., which serves the lowest income and most isolated seniors. Without the hot meals we provide on Saturdays and Sundays, these seniors would have no access to food on the weekends. Many of them lice in hotels or in one-room apartments with no access to cooking facilities.
Between Feb. 1 and July 31, 2011, we served 24,787 meals to 848 seniors. The senior population continues to explode and we see more seniors than ever before visiting our centers for meals. Much of it is driven by economic need, but it is often a desire to dine with others. Many of our seniors live alone and coming into one of our meal sites allows them to dine with others and have a conversation. The need for socialization is often as important as the need for food. Our vision is that no senior will go hungry or experience social isolation and we are helping that become a reality for seniors who live in downtown Portland.
