Before receiving safe water, latrines, and health education through this project, students at St. Theresia nursery school near Kumbo used the playground to relieve themselves. Diseases related to poor water and sanitation are an ongoing barrier to education in Cameroon, where rural access to water and sanitation is below 50 percent and one in ten children dies before reaching age five. Thousands more nursery and primary school students are still waiting for a clean and safe place to learn.
Trained technicians install latrines and modified biosand filters at participating schools and equip teachers and children to use and maintain them. Health educators help start hygiene clubs for students at each school.
This project has been retired and is no longer accepting donations.
This project has provided additional documentation in a PDF file (projdoc.pdf).
This project will help young children by removing barriers to their health and education, preparing them to work and lead as healthy adults. Behavioral changes learned at school are also demonstrated to positively affect families and communities.
LWDG-Cameroon has a team that is working to change the lives of the children. Health team, sand filter technicians and latrine builders and has two offices operational in Cameroon with staff.
