Summary
This project is spread across 7 villages in western India. Through rainwater harvesting, pond cleaning, well deepening etc. it will reduce the daily grind of 750 tribal women in collecting water. This would allow the women who are organized into Self Help Groups, additional time to pursue livelihood options they have been trained in. Consequently, a 50% rise in the family income of these women is strongly expected.
In 2011, a successful pilot of above outlined activities benefited 1600 people.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Poor access to potable water is the main challenge. Women from the targeted 750 tribal families spend 2-6hours daily to collect water to meet various needs. Facilitated by SNS Foundation, these women are organized into Self Help Groups and empowered to access micro-finance options from banks. However, the daily drudgery & lack of time prevents the women from spending quality & quantity time on furthering livelihood options, they have been trained in. Thus, slowing their economic progress.
How will this project solve this problem?
The targeted 750 families live across 7 villages of District Nasik, Maharashtra. Through customized approaches for each village e.g. deepening of existing well, construction of check dam, pond cleaning access to potable water will be enhanced. From spending 2-6 hours/day the women will be able collect water for all their needs in less than 1 hour a day. This would result in women being able to devote their time and energies towards pursuing more productive efforts.
Potential Long Term Impact
Poor access to potable water experienced by 4000 tribals will be resolved.
Long Term Effects are: Increase in ground water table, Reduced dependence on rain-fed agriculture, Better quality crops, Increase in family income (disposable income available),With enhanced family income better housing facilities, improved health and nutritional status & 100% enrollment of children in schools/ pursuance of education beyond facilities available directly in ones village will come along
