Riders Gambia Update, May 2008

World Malaria Day on April 25th was a stark reminder that this easily-preventable diseases continues to claim millions of lives every year.

By making sure that health workers can reach even the most remote communities on a regular basis, Riders for Health ensures that simple measures like bednets reach the people who need them most, helping to prevent the spread of malaria.

Download the feedback report below to find out more about how your donations are helping Riders to fight malaria in the Gambia.

Riders Gambia Update, January 2008

Riders for Health recently visited Jahangka and Mandinari, remote Gambian communities which are now benefiting from improved access to healthcare thanks to the generosity of GlobalGiving donors and the work of Riders for Health. Both these communities now have uhurus, multi-purpose vehicles that can act as community ambulances, water pumps and freight carriers in a region isolated by great distances and harsh terrain.

Read the full report below to hear more from the families you have helped in the Gambia.

At the end of 2007, we also re-launched our website, to bring you more up-to-date news about our work. Visit www.riders.org to find out more!

Meet the team - Ali Ceesay

Riders for Health’s teams in Africa are made up entirely of nationals of the countries in which we work. In the Gambia, where GlobalGiving donors are helping to support the Uhuru programme, a key member of the team is deputy programme director, Ali Ceesay. Born into a very poor family in Bansang, in the east of the country, Ali was determined to do whatever he could both to overcome his own and his family's poverty and to make a contribution to the development of the country. Here, he talks about Riders for Health and the Uhuru, and why access to reliable transportation is so vital to the people of rural Gambia.

The video tells our story and that of the people who are impacted by our work. Take a look at some attached photos and our new photos in the project photo gallery.

Thank you for your generous support.

Turn $50 into $5,000

In June, Riders for Health participated in the first ever GlobalGiving FilmFest – a unique video competition designed to raise awareness of GlobalGiving projects and connect them with the support they need.

More than 12,420 people watched the videos - a major step in raising awareness for the issues these projects address – and we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for our project, ‘Health Care and Water for 7,000 Gambians’.

Now, thanks to the generosity of one of GlobalGiving’s most valued partners, eBay, three of the projects featured in the FlimFest are to benefit from additional funds to support their life-saving work. The idea is simple – GlobalGiving will log the donations received by the FilmFest projects until 11.59PM EST on Friday July 27, and the projects with the top three donation dollars will receive an additional $5,000, $3,000 or $2,000 from eBay. These funds are only available to the projects that submitted content for the GlobalGiving FilmFest. To find out more, visit: http://www.globalgiving.com/filmfest_results.html

In Africa a child dies every 30 seconds from malaria, even though a simple mosquito net could mean the difference between life and death. Please help Riders for Health to reach more people in the Gambia with the regular health care they need to beat ill-health and poverty, by making a donation today and spreading the word to friends and family! Remember, you only have until July 27, 11:59 PM EST to make your donation count!

Thank you!
