Water Dissemination Update from Country Programs

In 2006, the numbers of those reached through our water dissemination projects dramatically increased. IDE has announced a major effort to develop and scale up production of a series of low-cost irrigation technologies. Below is a break down of some country programs and the number of those reached by our technologies.

In Zambia, IDE has reached nearly 27,000 beneficiaries with irrigation and market interventions, institutional capacity development programs, and impact assessment studies.

In Zimbabwe, even in a climate of four digit inflation and severe economic decline IDE's projects continued to improve livelihoods of vulnerable populations. Thus far, IDE has supplied 13,120 drip systems, impacting 12,000 rural families and 30,000 urban and peri-urban families in Zimbabwe.

In Nepal, IDE worked with 70,159 farmers, focusing mainly on small plot irrigation for high value vegetable production.

Myanmar's Smallholder Irrigation Initiative raises incomes and improves food security by researching and designing affordable small-plot irrigation technologies and engaging the private sector to produce and disseminate them across the country. The program has trained 132 people to work as village level pump demonstrators. These demonstrations were attended by 62,000 villagers in 97 townships.

Scientific American. The Big Potential of Small Farms.

By making an average investment of $250 per household, IDE changes the lives of farmers and their families. In the six-month period from September 2005 to March 2006 alone, IDE programs reached a combined 46,780 full and partial participant households and 1,140 micro- and small enterprises, and generated $6,030,000 in additional net annual income for our rural customers. Over the past 25 years, IDE has impacted 17 million poor rural families.

A donation of $250, coupled with a $200 investment from a farming family over three years, results in an average net income increase of $300 per year for that family!
