Water and sanitation for 6,000 people in Kenya

Summary

The program will serve five rural communities of 6,000 people in Kyuso, Kenya, with: borehole wells, community, household, and school latrines, hygiene education, and community development programs.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Only 30% of people have access to potable water facilities in Kyuso district; safe sanitation coverage is even less. Kyuso is affected by an ongoing drought and has received food relief for the last five years. It is also an area that has cross-communal conflicts due to competition for pasture and water sources. Water and sanitation-related diseases and deaths are one of the major problems affecting people in this area.

How will this project solve this problem?

•Construct 5 borehole wells, 25 latrines, 5 cattle troughs •Train school officials, teachers, health clubs, and community committees on safe water, sanitation, and hygiene practices •Organize 5 water and sanitation commitees

Potential Long Term Impact

•6,000 people will gain access to safe water and sanitation, and hygiene education •Decreased prevalence of common waterborne diseases affecting children under five years of age •Increased household incomes by 30% through diverse water use
