This report covers Village Earth's activites over the past three months. If you are a new supporter of Village Earth than you should know that the mission of Village Earth is to reconnect communities to the resources that promote human well-being by enhancing social and political empowerment, community self-reliance and self-determination. We do this by strengthening intermediate and grassroots organizations through fiscal sponsorship, networking, training, research and advocacy. Our flagship program to achieving this mission is our Global Affiliate Program where we partner with innovative and impactful grassroots and intermediate organizations and provide a number of support services that help them access more resources and be more effective on the ground. We believes that local community organizations or groups can best identify their own needs and aspirations. Village Earth’s Global Affiliate Program, by providing a support structure, enables community groups to access information and to find the resources they need to enhance or expand what they are already doing, or would like to do in a sustainable future as they envision it.

We are proud to partner with such groups as:

  • Empowering Youth Cambodia: working with the next generation of youth leaders living in Cambodia’s over-crowded urban slums;
  • Forum for Community Change and Development in South Sudan: advancing the rights of women in a country in deep conflict;
  • Jenzera: working to protect the rights and territories of indigenous and ethnic minorities in Colombia.

These are just three of the 17 different grassroots organizations that are part of our Global Affiliate Program.

Below is a testimonial from one of our Global Affiliates the Knife Chief Buffalo Nation Organization based on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

“Knife Chief Buffalo Nation, a grassroots organization on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, raises buffalo and provides for their care as they provide spiritual and physical nourishment for the Lakota people.  The buffalo are central to the Lakota spiritual way of life and we are honored to do this work although it is often very challenging to obtain resources for all that is needed to be done.  Village Earth helps Knife Chief Buffalo Nation to meet these challenges by providing technical assistance, fiscal accountability and support for our work.  We are fortunate to have such an organization to partner with!”

Accomplishments This Quarter

  • Worked with each of our 17 Global Affiliates to develop a end-of-year fundraising plan. Many of our affilaites are not aware of the large culture of philanthropy that exists in the United States and aren't familiar with the various cultural norms for asking for donations for their projects. Village Earth works with our affiliates to assemble a compelling story of the work they are doing and get that message out via the web, email, direct mail, etc. We also provide US fiscal sponsorship for our affiliates which allows donors to get a tax-deduction for supporting them. The larger goal of this program is for our Affiliates to build an individual donor-base which enhances autonomy and local self-determination relative to grants or contracts which often have predefined outcomes and other "strings" attached.
  • Supporting one of our Affiliates based on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, "Tasunke Wakan", to host a conference this month called "Healing the Spirit of the Child , Youth and Family Conference"
  • We have begun discussions with three new potential affiliates based in Cambodia, Uganda, and Liberia and are undergoing our due-dilligence.
  • Ongoing work of donation processing and promotion of Global Affiliates.

Challenges

  • As one might expect, we have some Affiliates that are much more computer/web savvy than others and have trouble getting quality narratives and photos from some groups.
  • Lack of measurable indicators of "impact" of our support programs makes it difficult to convey OUR story.
  • Lots of knowledge regardind project and org management and fundraising within our network of Affiliates is "siloed".

Next Steps

  • We plan to continue to grow our program to enhance sustainability but to also maximize peer learning and peer support by creating more opportunities for networking (online and in-person).
  • We plan to develop a more effective mechanism to identify the needs of each Global Affiliate and develop customized support plans.
  • Consistent with the above step, we want to develop some baseline indicators for each affiliate along with regular assessments to better mesure progress towards shared goals.

Conclusion

Village Earth's Global Affiliate Program, while only in its third year, has grown rapidly and has proven its value to our 17 different Global Affiliates. By growing the program and both refining and expanding our services, we are confident it will become a powerful resource for growing and expanding grassroots organizations around the globe - building local and regional capacity and resiliency.

Dear supporters of Village Earth's campaign to provide training and support to grassroots organizations. For new supporers of this project, we at Village Earth believe the most effective and efficient way to support the empowerment of marginalized peoples around the globe is to support and strengthen their own local and indigenous-run organizations. This approach not only helps enhance local self-reliance but also ensures greater cultural and political self-determination. Yet, despite the widespread acknowledgement of  the effectiveness of local organizations in identifying and addressing issues, their work often goes unnoticed.

Since our last report and with your generous support, we have accomplished a great deal towards our mission. Most significantly, we forged a new partnership with an organization based in Siem Reap, Cambodia that provides a wide range of support services to nearby communities including education, vocational training, micro-savings and micro-lending, and other technical support. While they have developed a vast support network in Australia, Village Earth will help them develop a network of support throughout the United States.

Also during this quarter, Village Earth is has been ramping up our advocacy work for Native American Farmers and Ranchers by developing and info-graphic that will be used to present agricultural census data for Native American Reservations recently published by the USDA. Specificly, we seek to build on our longstanding advocacy for Native Americans who seek to utilize their own lands withing the existing boundaries of their Reservation lands. Currently, the great majority of these lands are under the control of non-native farmers and ranchers - an injustice created by over 120 years of racist and exclusionary policies developed and enforced by the Federal Government. We hope to launch this infographic on our website and social media channels at the endo of this month.

Again, I want to personally thank you for your support - we couldn't do this work without you!

Dear Supporters of Village Earth,

We at Village Earth believe the most effective and efficient way to support the empowerment of marginalized peoples around the globe is to support and strengthen their own local and indigenous-run organizations. This approach not only helps enhance local self-reliance but also ensures greater cultural and political self-determination. Our project on Globalgiving.org titled "Training and Support for Grassroots Organizations" is focused on growing this program within Village Earth (a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization). Currently, the Global Affiliate Program provides fiscal sponsorship, networking, technical support and training to 17 different grassroots organizations in 11 different countries. Since our last report in March of 2014, a lot has happend for Village Earth's Global Affiliate Program, most significantly we approved a new organization to join our Global Affiliate Program "The Human and Hope Association". (http://www.villageearth.org/global-affiliates/human-and-hope-association).

The Human and Hope Association is a registered NGO in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Initially set up as a grassroots association by a group of motivated Khmers to teach English to the community, they now provide English, Morality and Preschool class, library time and weekend Movie Club and Art Class. Their Vocational Sewing program targets the poorest members of the community with a sustainable skill, their Microfinance and Family Farm program aims to provide finances and support to people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to receive it, and their Community Support focuses on promoting the benefits of education through community visits and scholarships.

Also, since our last report in March, we have helped our Affiliates raise nearly $10,000 to support programs that were 100% designed and carried-out by local grassroots organizations working on issues such as cultural self-determination on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, global climate change on the Cheyenne River Reservation, youth empowerment in Cambodia, and ending violence against women and girls in South Sudan.

By supporting this project on Globalgiving.org you are helping us to grow our Global Affiliate Program to achieve the critical mass necessary to become self-sufficient - serving as a permanent support structure for innovative and impactful grassroots organizations around the globe.

Thank you for your support!

Respectfully,

David Bartecchi

Dear Supporter,

I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for your support of our project on Globalgiving.org titled “Training and Support for Grassroots Organizations.” Your donations allow us to partner with innovative and impactful organizations around the world and provide them with technical support and training they need to more effectively carry-out their programs and get the resources they need to do their work on the ground. Since our last report in December and with your help, Village Earth was able to extend our support to two new grassroots organizations; “Mni” (which means “water” in the Lakota language) based on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota and Titukuke Rural Community Development Association based in Petuake Zambia.

Your donations help us to deliver support services like direct one-to-one project consultations and referral services. For example for Mni, Village Earth helped Mni develop a map used for education and planning purposes for their project site on the Cheyenne River Reservation n South Dakota USA. We also helped them communicate with current and future donors by helping them get their website online and promoting their project in print and radio. For Titukuke, we have helped them refine their messaging to better communicate their work to donors in the United States. Of course, for both organizations, Village Earth serves as  bridge to resources, connecting them with donors throughout the United States.

As a supporter of Village Earth I encourage you to share with us your questions and ideas for how we can improve both our work with communities and with our outreach to donors like yourself. Please don’t hesitate to contact me directly at david@villageearth.org.

Once again, thank you for your support and solidarity!

Sincerely,

David Bartecchi
