Kids at school in Chile start having English as part of their curriculum in middle school, but oftentimes classes are too big to get all the practice that everyone needs to learn a new language. VE Global helps support language education because the kids we work with need lots of support and confidence building activities to show them that learning a new language can be fun.
As part of VE's English in Motion program, VE Global volunteers and kids recently tested their English language skills during VE's first eXtreme English day. Girls of all ages from Hogar San Francisco and Refugio de la Misericordia got into teams and worked with the volunteers on numbers, colors, clothing and other important English vocabulary to help boost their confidence for English classes at school!
A special thank you to Hogar San Francisco for hosting the day! Fun was had by all!
Fall is upon us! With all the craziness of back to school, our volunteers have been hard at work with the kids! Here's what we've been up to...
Back to the future….
Earlier this month, we had our bi-annual Festival de Arte, and the theme was the future. We were blown away by the artwork and shows the volunteers helped the kids prepare. Our friends from American Tower helped us pick winners, who all went home with new art supplies to work on their future masterpieces! The judges had such a difficult time choosing winners from the performances that there was a tie for second place, so both groups of performers from Pléyades and Domingo Savio will be going out for pizza parties! The girls from San Francisco put on an unforgettable theater performance that won them first place and a trip to Fantasilandia.
We're turning 10!
What were you doing ten years ago? In two short months, we will begin celebrating one decade of VE Global! We're looking forward another ten years with all of you! We want all of you with us as we celebrate this huge milestone: keep your eyes peeled for our first anniversary event on June 23rd!
Summer in Santiago means lots of fun in the sun and quality time with the kids. School's out, which means volunteers get to be extra creative with workshops and activities. We are so lucky to have such a great new group!
Our new January 2015 Class survived two intense weeks of orientation and came out ready to start volunteering with their new skills and valuable knowledge. They are finishing up their first month at their partner organizations and have already done so many amazing things!
Santiago summer brings on our annual reading program ¡Vamos a Leer!. Volunteers are motivating kids to meet summer reading goals over the next month and getting ready to celebrate at our summer Carnaval at the end of the February.
Can you help make this year's Carnaval the best one ever by helping us buy books, snacks and other supplies for the event?
What are you thankful for? This year, VE is thankful for its amazing volunteers and incredible donors and extended family across the world. People like you allow us to continue to do the work we do, and we are thankful for your dedicated support. As we move into summer here in Chile, we want to make this holiday season as special as possible for the kids!
There are many ways to get involved, and #GivingTuesday is right around the corner. Please think about us next Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014.
This month our we had our tri-annual Jornada retreat in a small coastal town. It was a great opportunity for the volunteers to take a step back and think about their experiences thus far, just past the halfway point in their four-month journeys. We did different team-building activities and had small group discussions. Fun was had by all!
Dear VE friends,
September brought spring to Chile, and with it the days of celebration of Chile's Fiestas Patrias. During the holiday we enjoyed traditional Chilean cueca, empanadas and asados. We ended the month with our monthly Liga de Deportes. This month’s sport theme was hockey. During the Liga we aslo had a workshop where the children learned how to keep themselves safe online with important internet safety tips. As always, we ended the day with a healthy snack.
For $40 USD VE Global are able to give 20 children healthy snacks during our Liga de Deportes. We are a non-profit organization and without the financial support from individuals and business partners our work with children at-risk in Santiago de Chile would not be possible. We are very grateful for all the support we receive!
At VE Global we are always looking for passionate, driven and caring individuals who are willing to make a BIG commitment and a BIG difference! If you are interested in making a positive impact in the lives of children at social risk, become volunteer with VE Global in Santiago! Learn more about our program by visiting our website or contact us.
¡Un abrazo desde Santiago!
