This project will enable the solar electrification of three new classrooms that previous groups of interns helped construct and decorate at Buyobo Primary School. It will also continue the 'tea and buns' program for the teachers at the Primary School. This program is sponsored by a group of US High School students who will travel to Uganda in June 2012 to teach English and Math at Buyobo Primary School.
The school buildings have no electricity so once it is dark, children must leave. Through book donations, one of the new classrooms has become a library that could be used more frequently after school hours. Teachers could also hold after school tutoring or study sessions. In Uganda, your 7th grade final exams dictate where you can go to Secondary school-extra time in the library or with a tutor is invaluable! Teachers often walk 2 miles to school every morning and have nothing to eat all day.
With solar electricity to keep the library and two of the classrooms open later, students will have more time to study for their exams. They will also begin a tutoring program for students in 6th and 7th grade. With a cup of tea and a bun, teachers are more capable of keeping up with their lively students!
The new lights will help students obtain an effective primary school education, qualify for secondary school, and graduate with a diploma that will give them a chance to get a salaried job and break the cycle of poverty.
The teachers of Buyobo P.S. are very happy and said the solar electricity is going to contribute to the improvement of the standard of our pupils.
