Every year, Tutorpedia Foundation receives applications from deserving low-income students who need extra support to succeed in school. In 2012, we received over 50 applications from students that we did not have the resources to support. With every $1000 raised, this ongoing project will provide a year's worth of free, one-on-one tutoring for one student with an exceptional tutor who can help him or her excel both academically and in his or her everyday life.
In California public schools, by sixth grade the average class size is 29 students. This means it is nearly impossible for teachers to give every student the personalized attention they need to succeed. Under this system, deserving students who want to learn and do well in school often aren't able to get the support they need to graduate, go to college, and develop a lifelong passion for learning.
Scholarship students receive one hour of free tutoring every week throughout the school year. Tutors help with homework, test preparation, study skills, and organizational strategies. All tutoring is aligned with California State Standards and grounded in the latest cognitive research about how we learn best. Most importantly, all tutoring is student-centered: Our tutors focus each session on the individual needs and goals of each student.
Tutorpedia Foundation believes that the one-on-one tutoring model, institutionalized in schools, can close achievement gaps, graduate more students from high school, and prepare more students for post-secondary education. Personalized tutoring is a powerful tool that ultimately promotes equity and social justice through more personalized education. Our vision is to graduate 100% of our students from high school and prepare them for college.
