Summary
Providing emergency relief and rebuilding livelihoods of victims of the tsunami in S Asia with the provision of drinking water, food, emergency shelter, mobile clinics, and livelihoods micro loans
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
1.5 million people are displaced in South Asia, and millions are at risk of waterborne diseases. Survivors of the tsunami are in urgent need of potable water, food, medical assistance, and shelter. RI is providing both immediate relief services to a population of about 50,000 in East and South Sri Lanka and long-term sustainable livelihood-rebuilding resources to at least 100,000 people.
How will this project solve this problem?
Mobile clinics on the Sri Lankan coast. Truck fleet brings water to 5,000+ displaced families. Distributing food and emergency shelter. Provide micro loans to fishermen to repair boats and to women who make nets
Potential Long Term Impact
Nearly 5,000 families are provided food and shelter. Self-reliance and recovery of livelihoods achieved for thousands of families through targeted lending programs for repair of fishing boats and provision of fishnets
