Summary
RI is renovating Sri Lankan schools that were damaged or destroyed by the tsunami in order to help the local youth return to their education, which is invaluable to thier growth and return to normalcy
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
The devastating tsunamis of Dec 2004 hit the coast of Sri Lanka - killing thousands of people, washing homes out to sea, & destroying dozens of schools in the process. Yet Sri Lanka's youth need to continue learning as part of the country's long process to recovery. The renovation of these schools serve to resume the education of students affected by the tsunamis while providing them with a global education to heal the region.
How will this project solve this problem?
RI is refurbishing schools in Sri Lanka for tsunami-affected youth by securing new walls, building new roofs, upgrading sanitation services, weatherproofing the structures, & furnishing them with school supplies such as desks & chalkboards.
Potential Long Term Impact
Expansions of the school's buildings allow the schools to accommodate two more classrooms (from 6 to 8) & increased the total floor area by 50%. Classrooms are now weatherproof for the rain with clean sanitation facilities for students to use.
Project Message
"Among all those affected by the tsunamis, the youth have particularly suffered due to the destruction of their schools. Now they can finally regain a sense of purpose & routine in their lives."
