A PEACE OASIS IN CONFLICT ZONES

"Students in Colombia, are capable of resolving conflicts
by peaceful means, to think for themselves,
and find a way to reconcile their desires and purposes "
Villa Turbay ´s school teacher

At Mi Sangre Foundation, we are convinced that youth and childhood has an immense potential for social transformation; for this reason we developed educational programs for peace and provide children and young people with useful tools that allows them to learn how to solve their conflicts by peaceful means and assume values that translate into attitudes and habits of a harmonious coexistence.

In this process of Education for Peace, the synergy between the entire school community including teachers, students, parents, and society in general, has been vital.

At Villa Turbay’s school, located in Medellín’s 8th commune, is latent the impact the Education Project for Peace has generated not only among students but among teachers also. Carol Cossio, Headmaster of the school says that "thanks to the Civic Skills Training students are having, they are learning to live with each other and to act constructively in society, meanwhile teachers have recognized the value of freedom in education, as a tool to potentiates commitment, empowerment and participation”

Commune 8 at Medellín is one of the most violent areas in the city with ongoing battles from illegal armed groups; however this community resists violence, neighborhoods like Villatina, La Sierra and Villa Turbay have high participation in “Culture of Peace” projects either from a social, environmental or artistic point of view.

The education institute Villa Turbay, has not been immune to the phenomenon of violence, studying there are familiars of criminal gangs members, there are even young people that have been recruited by bands, and fortunately have not dropped out. As is the case of a senior student, which states that after participating in the process of Education for Peace he is convinced that war is not a life project, and instead wishes to enter university to study Plastic Arts.

Without doubt, this Institution is an oasis of peace in a conflict zone where you can find values as justice, freedom, democracy, solidarity, critical attitude, commitment, fellowship, respect, cooperation, autonomy, love, equity and citizen participation.

La I.E.
