Summary
Lead Us Today empowers Zimbabwean high school students with the leadership skills to mobilize their communities in addressing their own challenges through implementing collectively designed development projects. Starting in June 2013, we will train 1,000 students in 25 high schools, who will mobilize at least another 1,000 community members to work together on various projects. Through our intervention, we are creating a generation of engaged and socially responsible citizens in Zimbabwe.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
In Zimbabwe, only 4% of students writing their secondary school examinations eventually secure a job with decent income given the education system's design and the startling 70% unemployment rate. Unfortunately, the rigid school curriculum does not provide young people with skills that allow them to thrive in spite of their circumstances. As a result of this overwhelming reality, young people are despondent; they doubt their ability and capacity to make a difference.
How will this project solve this problem?
Our work aims to empower at least 96% of current high school students with the leadership and entrepreneurial skills to take initiative, innovate and effect social change. We transform high schools into community learning centers in which we provide leadership training to high school students who mobilize community members to address a specific high-priority issue every year.
Potential Long Term Impact
By continually training, mobilizing and engaging students in self-initiated sustainable development projects, we will build their capacity to address their own challenges. We will enrich the learning experience of high school students while we contribute to the continued learning of community members. Each year, the 40 students from each school that we train and the 40 community members they mobilize will learn how to take action and effect social change.
Project Message
If everyone had this sense of unity and passion about their communities, it wouldn't take us long to be our own benefactors!
