This project will provide 10 days of training to 10 midwives in Nepal. They will be taught safe birthing techniques and early identification of problems. This will enable them to save mothers' lives. Worldwide Healing Hands is partnering with Himalayan Healthcare to bring midwives from throughout the region to Ilam for this training. The Worldwide Healing Hands mission team is made up of all volunteers: doctors, nurses, and a certified nurse/midwife.
Infant and maternal mortality rates in Nepal are among the highest in the world. Midwives typically attend the births, and often perform deliveries on bare dirt floors with a minimum of equipment. The midwives often do not have the equipment or training to diagnose common complications early enough to make a difference, nor do they have the simple items that can make a birth a "clean birth" to minimize infections. A pill that costs as little as a postage stamp can prevent post-partum hemorrhage.
This project will provide 10 days of training to 10 midwives from throughout Eastern Nepal. The training will be conducted in Ilam, Nepal. The midwives will be taught clean birthing techniques and early identification of problems in the birthing process. The midwives will leave the training with higher technical skills, a supply of clean birthing kits, and some basic equipment such as a stethoscope and a fetal heart monitor.
The midwives will leave the training with real-life skills they can apply every day in their practices. They will be trained by experienced gynecologists and midwives.
