As we prepare to celebrate the holiday season and welcome a new year, we at New Community for Children wanted to take a moment to share our gratitude to everyone who has supported us this year! It is through your support that we have been able to provide an academically and socially enriching program to 100 kids after school and during the summer in 2012. Although we are proud to provide programming that is intellectually stimulating to our children, we are more proud to be a nurturing and supportive safe space for our kids. We are able to meet the many needs of our kids because of you!
On behalf of all of us at New Community for Children, we are so grateful for your generosity! We could not make such a great impact on the lives of the children and families we serve without your support. Thank you!
We wish you a wonderful holiday season and a joyous and prosperous new year!
After completing a great seven week summer program, our after-school program for 100 kids has just begun! This school year, we are building upon the successes of our summer program by continuing to engage kids in activities that support the process of learning, encouraging them to ask questions and make connections to bolster their success this school year.
In addition to academic enrichment in subjects such as mathematics, literacy and science, our students will engage in activities such as gardening, cooking, yoga, karate, and art. Yoga and karate are newer additions to our curriculum that students have been engaged in since the spring. The students are really enjoying these components and some of our kids will even be testing to receive a higher level karate belt!
This school year is shaping up to be a great one for the kids and staff at New Community for Children. Our success is possible because of you! Thank you for your continued support!
At New Community for Children, our staff and students are winding down a great school year, and gearing up for an amazing summer! New Community's theme for the summer program is "NCID: New Community Investigation & Discovery". Over the summer, students will be engaged in activities that support the process of learning. This summer's theme is designed to encourage students to ask questions and make connections as we get students moving and going towards their successes in the upcoming school year.
In addition to the academic component, students will engage in programming such as karate and yoga, which supports our goal of keeping our students active physically and academically over the summer. We have extended our programming to 7 weeks, to ensure that our kids are fully prepared for the new school year.
Over the past few months, New Community has made some awesome upgrades to our program space. We would love to have you stop by and see just what we've done to the place! For more information, please visit our website www.ncfc-dc.org.
Thank you so much for your continued support of New Community for Children!
On February 27, 2012, New Community for Children received a visit from some very special guests! Edgar Jones of the Baltimore Ravens, Josh Portis of the Seattle Seahawks and Vic Jagger of the Russ Parr Morning Show came to NCFC to read with students, as well as discuss the importance of a great education and making good choices.
Our boys were especially excited because they have formed their own football team, the New Community Razorbacks. They asked a lot of questions, and found out what it takes to be a great football player. The professionals shared their experiences trying to make it to the NFL, and encouraged our boys to complete their education before jumping into football so that they could be successful outside of football.
Vic Jagger imparted the importance of believing in yourself to our students by sharing her story. She encouraged our kids to always pursue their passions and never give up on their goals, even when people tell you that you won't succeed. She told them that they could do anything that they put their mind to.
One of the best lessons that our kids learned that day came from Edgar Jones. He shared a great piece of advice that he received from his mentor. He told the kids that "being great is a lonely place." He encouraged them to always do the right thing, even when the people around them choose not to.
New Community for Children would like to thank Vann D. Ashe of Ashe Entertainment Group for making this wonderful event possible. It was a day our students won't soon forget!
As 2011 comes to a close, we wanted to take the time to wish you all Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year. We have experienced many successes and joys providing kids in Shaw DC with highly engaging academic and social enrichment programs after school and summer this past year. Let me share just one of these with you!
Jahi is the oldest of three kids living with their mother in Shaw. Jahi struggled at times in elementary school. He enrolled at New Community for Children in the 7th grade, pulled himself up to do well enough to earn acceptance to one of Washington DC's public exam schools - School Without Walls. Jahi is now in his sophomore year of high school and his prospects are looking great! He traveled to China over the summer for a school trip and writes, records, and performs hip hop music in the area. New Community for Children has been able to help with Jahi's goals and improve his academics, specifically in math where he struggled for years. With the help of his NCFC tutor last year, Jahi increased his grade in Geometry from a D to a B by the end of the 2010-2011 school year.
It is the support of donors like you that makes our work possible. Your generous donations throughout the year have allowed us to continue the mission and the work of New Community for Children! On behalf of our staff, board of directors and the families that we serve, thank you!
