Thunder 96 Lends a Helping Hand while at Tourney

Team Dedication-Sydney Angle
Team Dedication-Sydney Angle

In May 2013, the town of Moore, Oklahoma and surrounding areas were struck by a devastating EF5 tornado. Winds reached 210 miles per hour and the twister stayed on the ground for 39 minutes, destroying homes, businesses and 2 public elementary schools. Twenty-four people lost their lives and 377 were injured that terrible day.

One of those killed was a 9 year-old girl named Sydney, a third-grader at Plaza Towers Elementary School, and a softball player with "Bring It" a local ASA softball team. In addition to the loss of their child, the Angle family home was destroyed in the storm, leaving Sydney's parents, sister and brother without shelter.

Oregon Thunder '96 was scheduled to travel to Okalahoma City in June for the Hall of Fame National Qualifier Tournament and felt the call to help the Angle family. Our Thunder family and friends raised $860 in donations for the Angles. The Thunder girls now wear decals on their batting helmets with the state of Okalahoma and Sydney's #35 in her memory. Thunder girls and families visited the site of Plaza Towers Elementary, Syndey's school, and were awed by the total devastation that we witnessed, but were also touched by the unity of the community and work being done to clear out the rubble, rebuild and restart their lives.  The rest of the Thunder 96 season has been dedicated to Sydney's memory.

During the teams time in Oklahoma City they also played in the Hall of Fame softball tournament where they earned a berth for the USA/ASA National tournament. They leave next week to participate in this tournament in San Jose, California with 138 teams from around the nation.
