our life is better now

By Laxmi Devi - Womens sewing centre member, November 25, 2009 11:33 AM

Our centreOur festival chhach
Our centre is a happy place. our lives are hard and there is little time to relax and forget the cares of our lives. But in the centre we can laugh and learn, we can feel hope, we can show our friendship, we can be free.

What the centre means to us

By Sheetal Kumari - Sewing Centre member, July 19, 2009 12:56 PM

Our Centre
My name is sheetal. I am I think 16 years old as my mother tells me 16 rainy seasons have passed since I was born. We have seen our Global Giving page on a computer brought from the people first office and we are all so thankfull and grateful so many kind people are caring and helping us. Life in my village is sometimes hard we do not have electricity and sometimes food is short. I was married two years ago and I am lucky because my husband is kind to me and gives me permission to go to the market and sewing centre. But some other members are not so lucky, but under pressure from all of us we get their husbands not to object to thier wives coming to the centre. Here we are learning a useful skill but this is the only place we can meet as women in friendship and in mutual support. We are now stopping drunken behaviour from the men, we have patrolled the village with 35 of us forcing the local drinking shop to close, now drunken beatings are a thing of the past and our village is more peaceful and we feel more secure. On behalf of all the women I would like to invite you to visit our village and see our centre, and we can thank you personally for making it all possible

Thank you for thinking of us

By Pramilla Kumari - Sewing centre member, May 15, 2009 02:13 PM

My name is Pramilla Kumari. My family is very poor and life is a struggle. Before our sewing centre came to our village it was difficult to see any hope that things could get better. Now the women and young girls are strong together and we have a chance to make some money for our children and families through our own efforts. Before I felt afraid and alone. No my life has changed so much for the better. Thank you for helping us.
