Portland, Oregon Woman Walks Eight Miles to Help Save Starving Dogs & Cats

By Larry Chusid | Project Leader

The Pongo Fund Emergency Pet Food Bank received the call. The message was frightening. We learned that there were two dogs and four cats that had gone without food for several days. When asked if they had eaten anything during that time, the caller's answer was disturbing: Cake. That's right. Nothing but cake.

The call came from Allison. She met a family that was struggling; recent medical issues had created financial upheaval. The cupboards were empty and the food stamps were gone. All that remained was cake. And that became breakfast, lunch and dinner for these starving animals. The Pongo Fund Critical Response Team kicked into gear, a small group of volunteers that responds as quickly as possible in case of emergency. Working together with Allison, we made sure these animals had food for their dinner. And that was just the first step.

The Pongo Fund, based in Portland, Oregon, operates the largest Emergency Pet Food Bank in the Pacific Northwest. This is an example of the kind of work we do every day. Thanks to our generous pet food partners like Canidae All Natural Pet Foods, we donate more than one million quality meals each year for the starving family pets of anyone in honest need.

We take this work seriously and we maintain an absolute obligation to keep animals from being abandoned or surrendered when their families cannot afford to keep them fed. Because every single animal safe at home is one less animal at risk of being euthanized in an overcrowded shelter.

As Mother Teresa said, “If you can't feed one hundred, then feed just one." We know that we can't feed them all or save them all, but today we saved many. And with your help, tomorrow we’ll save even more.

All of us at The Pongo Fund sincerely thank you for joining us in this lifesaving effort. By working together, maybe someday we will save them all.

Sit. Stay. Eat. Live.
