The San Vicente Fundación Hospital was founded 100 years ago by Don Alejandro Echavarria; a highly recognized businessman who was inspiredto build the hospital after seeing his wife Ana Josefa Misas suffer because of a painful illness.
He expressed "I have seen her suffer so much during this illness that I began to think, that if she, having all comforts and resources of medical science, has suffered so much, how will the poor not be suffering in sickness without anyone to provide relief, without the resources to pay for doctors, operations and medications.
I decided to found a hospital, but a large hospital, very large so that it could always accommodate every child of Antioquia and the rest of the country in need of its services.
I have seen the sick lying on the sidewalk for days, waiting for their turn to occupy one miserable cot, today I'll talk to some of my friends and I call on the whole society of Medellin, with the assurance that my idea will be well received by all the inhabitants of this charitable city "
On the night of May 16, 1913 he proceeded to name the institution and elect the first Board.
From then onward charitable supporters from Antioquia, Colombia and all around the world have made donations to the Hospital. Most of our walls, equipment of the latest technology and the policy of offering open health services especially to those who cannot pay for them, are a testimony what solidarity is able to achieve in perpetuity.
