Self Sufficiency Store for Prostitution Prevention

Summary

The store will sell clothing and other goods to poor migrant families in the community. DEPDC vocational students will operate the store and sell their own products.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Nearly 150 children vulnerable to human trafficking and 50 adults in the community participate in DEPDC vocational programs. To prevent children from entering the sex trade or becoming victims of trafficking, DEPDC offers trainings for poor families to increase their income. The store will provide a local market for these at-risk children and families to earn money to support themselves. Most children have no citizenship documents and cannot attend regular school or work outside of DEPDC.

How will this project solve this problem?

Build a small storefront to sell goods produced at the DEPDC vocational program. The store will also offer second hand goods at discounted prices to members of the community. Children will practice selling items and working in the community.

Potential Long Term Impact

The store will strengthen the link between the community and DEPDC. Migrant workers from hill tribe groups/Burma will have greater access to essential items for daily life. Children will be empowered by selling the goods they produce themselves.
