In her end -of- year report, Sister Christiane, Principal of Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Haiti’s Artibonite Region, writes that this past year was unlike any other,largely on account of the positive impact that the provision of textbooks to each and every child had on the teaching environment. The teachers reported that the children were generally more attentive and interactive in class. Sister considers the GlobalGiving-enabled initiative a revolutionarydevelopment!
The 6th grade students who took the end- of- year national exam, a requirement for proceeding to the middle school level ,had a 94% passing rate. This compares to a national passing rate of about 65%. On the other hand, the 2012-2013 in-school passing rate for students in grades 1-5, was only 73% - - underscoring the magnitude of the challenges that remain to be met. These include, interalia, overcrowded classrooms, poorly paid and insufficiently trained teachers,as well as quite a number of malnourished children.
The majority of the books made available through the project will be recycled for the new school year scheduled to start on October 1, 2013 (a month later than usual). The only exception, as indicated in our previous report, is for students in grades 1-2 whose books cannot be used again because they had to write in the texts. Alternative arrangements have been made for books for students in these two grades for this year. We now have a new GlobalGiving project – http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/head-start-for-230-pre-school-children-in-haiti/-- for improving early childhood education at our school. The project will support teacher training, hiring of teachers’ aides, and pedagogical materials to further the children’s physical, cognitiveand social development.
We hope that you will stay with us and support this project which aims at building the foundation forlifelong learning and well-being for these 230 children, most of whom live in extreme poverty. A quality early childhood education is an excellent preventive measure which supports breaking of the cycle of intergenerational poverty. Thank you for your continued partnership. MESI ANPIL!
