This project will provide urgently needed textbooks in the key subjects of mathematics, language and History to 500 elementary school children in Haiti's Artibonite Valley with a view to increase their learning and achievement. A second priority of this project is to provide as well textbooks for the subjects of grammar, geography and sciences.
Our partner school--Our Lady of Perpetual Help--which educates the poorest students of Haiti's Artibonite Valley, experienced a dramatic enrollment increase from 300 to more than 700 students following the 2010 earthquake. Most parents cannot afford to buy textbooks for their children which can seriously limit the children's learning achievements. The provision of learning materials would provide the children key resources needed to learn and to have a chance for a better life.
If we provide the textbooks for the children, their capacity to learn will be enhanced because they will be able to better follow their teachers in class (9 out of 12 classes have more than 60 students per teacher) and also to study at home--a new experience for them.
This project will enhance learning for more than 500 elementary school girls and boys through the 6th grade and give them a solid basis for learning vocational skills or pursuing high school studies. Their baseline elementary education will also establish an important foundation for them to become productive members of their families and communities.
