There are an estimated 900,000 Afghans living with physical disabilities. Over half of the disabilities were caused by the atrocities of war. Approximately 300,000 of the country's disabled population have amputations of one or more legs or arms. People with disabilities live under extreme poverty and have very limited to no access to employment, education, health, sports.
We aim to empower persons with disabilities by developing community leaders. We hope to create sociocultural change in perspective of persons with disabilities. The program will be in part carried by American Wounded War Veterans, which will create a space for healing. Afghanistan will have an International Wheelchair Rugby team; this will be a starting point for new health and fitness opportunities through sports and an opportunity to compete for people with disabilities.
