Shanti Uganda is so excited to be a part of the Global Giving- Girl Effect Challenge! The Shanti Uganda Maternity and Learning Centre in Luweero, Uganda empowers young women and girls with sexual and reproductive health awareness and knowledge.
Through our Teen Girls Health and Empowerment workshop, Shanti Uganda reaches hundreds of young girls every year and equips them with the knowledge needed to make healthy choices. Led by a member of Shanti's midwife team, the workshops are always culturally appropriate and reach at the heart of the challenges these young Ugandan girls face.
During a recent community meeting the issue of 'sugar daddies' and the need to teach young women independence and self-sufficiency was raised. The community members felt that if girls were taught income generating skills they would not be tempted into relationships with older men.
Since this valuable meeting, Shanti Uganda has started introducing trade skills such as baking, sewing, and horticulture into our Health and Empowerment workshops. Any assistance received through The Girl Effect will only help to grow this new initiative. During our most recent Teen Girls workshop, Shanti's agriculturalist and all around handy-woman, Ritah taught the girls how to construct an oven using just a recycled 10 gallon drum, some bricks, and sand! And by the end of the training session what they were able to produce would make even the local baker green with envy!! :)
