Children with Aspergers and High Functioning Autism overcome loneliness and isolation at Take 2 Camp, which relies on recent advances in autism research to teach friendship skills.
Without special training, many bright, creative individuals with autism spectrum disorders are unable to enter mainstream school or work environments. Founded by a team of parents, special education experts and mental health professionals, Take 2's intensive summer program teaches kids vital skills and educates their parents and schools, too. Take 2 affirmatively recruits and provides financial aid to ensure the camp reflects the rich diversity of its Washington, DC community.
Campers enjoy four weeks of hard work and great fun, their days full of celebration as they learn and practice the fundamentals of social interaction. Parents engage in activities at home each evening that reinforce their child's new skills.
Campers experience social success, often for the first time, and know the joy of having a friend and being an appreciated member of a group. They gain skills that allow them to participate more fully in and share their gifts with the larger world.
"Take 2 provides state of the art, clinically informed, and research validated programming. It serves a vital role in the provision of services for children and is a model for future programs."
