Last year 1,750 children attended school in 11 village elementary schools that the Alliance currently supports. Since the inception of Alliance education programs, girls' school enrollment has increased substantially. The Alliance works with Village Education Councils to enforce the enrollment of girls in the classrooms; provide textbooks, supplies, and benchdesks for a strong education environment, and to enforce a partnership with the Malian government to ensure long-term sustainability.
Traditionally girls are expected to help their mothers with gardening during school hours, but mothers have learned the importance of sending their daughters to school and hope to be able to do so. School attendance continues to increase each year. More than 700 girls are now attending school in the 11 villages that the Alliance supports. Education is an opportunity that village women have historically never had.
The Alliance meets regularly with Village Education Councils to determine priorities and set goals for the coming year. All have the goal to increase the enrollment of girls in their schools. And, the Alliance continues to provide school supplies, textbooks, and bench desks for schools where enrollment is increasing.
The Alliance currently supports an adult literacy program in six villages. Mothers and fathers are learning to read and write. As children are raised with an education they will be able to communicate within their villages as well as in the capital city, Bamako.
"Before the school came, our village was in darkness; after the school came, we came into light."
