Support Trafficked & Abused girls in Kenya

Talia Agler Girl's Shelter is a project of CDTD which was established in January 2012 within the Nairobi Metropolitan to offer direct assistance to girls aged between 10-24 years and who are victims of human trafficking, child labor, forced migration and sexual abuse. To realize its Objectives, the shelter works through 4Rs to: Reach, Rescue, Rehabilitate and Reintegrate "one girl at a time". The Shelter accepts girls not only from Kenya but also those trafficked from across borders.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Kenya has been identified as a source, transit and destination point for victims of human trafficking. Increased numbers of young girls from poor families are illegally taken away from their home with a promise of a better life in the cities and neighboring countries. Such girls are exploited by their captors to provide free labor and sex. Unfortunately there is very little help available to enable trafficked and abused girls heal from their traumatic experience and reintegrate into society.

How will this project solve this problem?

The project will provide direct assistance (shelter and related services) to local and cross border girl victims of human trafficking. This will enhance the victims protection, safety, rehabilitation and social reintegration. Through community advocacy, the problem will be dealt with from the root as different stakeholders unite to fight the vice. Also, economic empowerment will be provided to poor households of the victims thereby reducing the incidence of re- trafficking and re-victimization

Potential Long Term Impact

Decreased vulnerability to trafficking for communities sensitized on human trafficking. In addition, there will be increased referrals for victims to available assistance. Rehabilitated victims will gain self-esteem and confidence to talk about their plight to potential victims. Those reintegrated will become productive members of their communities and become agents of change. Finally, the Project will stimulate government action on prosecution of perpetrators and enhance justice for victims
