This scholarship fund will enable orphans and vulnerable youth in Uganda to obtain their nursing degrees, which will both help them to secure their livelihoods and promote basic health care in their communities
Rural communities in southwestern Uganda have limited access to health care, in large part due to a severe shortage of trained medical staff, particularly front-line nurses. The region is home to large numbers of vulnerable youth, many of them HIV/AIDS orphans or refugees from Uganda's long-running civil war. While many youth aspire to become certified nurses and join the health workforce, they do not have funds to pay for their education.
The scholarship fund will work with community members to identify orphans and vulnerable youth to receive tuition and living expenses for a 2.5 year nursing program at MMMTI. After certification, graduates will serve as nurses in their communities.
The fund will provide nursing scholarships to 100 vulnerable youth. Graduates will have promising employment opportunities in both the public and private health sectors, and will directly contribute to a stronger health workforce in the region.
I am very grateful for the tuition support I have received from MMMTI to enable me to achieve my dream of completing tertiary education. This seemed impossible after losing both my parents.
