Summary
Uganda SPCA, the only animal welfare organization and shelter in Uganda, provides sanctuary to > 80 dogs and > 30 cats, community spay/neuter for approx 300 dogs/cats each yr, and humane ed in schools
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Uganda SPCA's animal shelter, "the Haven," serves Kampala, Entebbe & towns in between. It is the only animal shelter in Uganda (> 20 million people). The shelter has been operating approx 3 years & demand for services is huge but the donor community-people with the means to support the shelter-is tiny. The USPCA can't continue to provide spay/neuter, education, & sanctuary services without receiving support from outside of Uganda. The USPCA hopes to expand to a bigger site & offer more services.
How will this project solve this problem?
The project will provide food, vet care, and supplies for Haven dogs and cats, will provide equipment for the shelter, will support USPCA community animal services, and will contribute to land acqusition for a larger sanctuary.
Potential Long Term Impact
Increased community services will result in more spay/neuter of low-income family's pets--fewer animals will need shelter; expansion of capacity will fill the gap in demand for animal shelter services; education will increase the # of potential homes
Project Message
We envision having an animal sanctuary that Ugandan children will love to visit, where they will learn about kindness to animals, a place of peace & beauty. This could be a turning point for Uganda.
