Rural communities in South Africa don't have access to government services and remain underserviced, marginalized, isolated and subject to the poorest levels of service delivery. We partner with rural CBOs and provide grants, support and facilitate capacity building for organisational development and the implementation of the organisations programmes to address the needs of the communities they serve. We will be supporting 35 rural communities to deliver critical services and access to justice.
While the South African government speaks of prioritizing rural communities it is evident from SCAT's work that the rural areas remain underserviced, marginalized, isolated and subject to the poorest levels of service delivery. SCAT's primary concern is that the rights of the poor are not protected and that the poor have limited access to justice. This is compounded by gender issues, limited opportunities for sustainable livelihoods and limited access to HIV and AIDS prevention programmes.
SCAT's employs a dual financial and field based support system, both acting as a facilitating body for our local development agencies (LDA's) to develop as well as providing assistance for specific thematic programme areas to encourage communities to look at the overlap issues faced in their communities is key. The strategies that shape SCAT's efforts include institution-building, capacity building, mobilizing resources and developing intellectual capital.
The project aims to target more than 12 million people in the rural areas of South Africa that live under the poverty line, lacking access to opportunities, justice and basic needs. This intervention aims to equip community leaders to take ownership of their own development. We have managed to raise R 87 million in the last 5 years and directly affecting 212500 and indirectly 1062500 people. SCAT aims to double its reach in the next 5 years thus expanding our services to other provinces
