Update of Project August 2008

Naptime at the creche
Naptime at the creche

This update was translated and edited for clarity by staff and volunteers of Dreams Can Be Foundation August, 2008 1558 Creche Aids Families in Violent Rio Favela (A Creche Comunitária Nova Holanda) Community day-care center of “Nova Holanda” { A Creche Comunitária Nova Holanda } would like to thank you for your confidence in our work. One of the biggest changes we have had in the project is that the members of the technical team of the day care center are beginning to understand the importance of the problems that we confront in early childhood development. This has contributed significantly to the work with the children and the families. Certainly it will be important for the quality of the future education of 45 children and their families. This year we have reached directly and indirectly 138 people, offering services and as well discussing the collective community problems. Community day-care center of “Nova Holanda” develops social and pedagogical actions in the “Complexo da Maré”, one of the biggest slums in Rio de Janeiro with more than 100 thousand inhabitants. The Day-care center takes care of 45 children and their families with services that educate through pedagogical practices and the changing in the community’s quality of life. The donations aim to guarantee the feeding of the children and the payment of educators which is fundamental to guarantee the functioning of the day-care center. The project has gained more visibility, that permits a better understanding of the importance of our work and consequently more help from people, considering that sometimes is more difficult to meet and help in more direct way. We are pleased to have this opportunity to thank you for your support and the dissemination of information about and the donations realized. These donations have helped directly in the quality of the work that we develop here in the favela {slum} of “Complexo da Maré”, Rio De Janeiro - Brazil. The work of the technical pedagogic team with the 45 children gained in quality. We are starting a partnership with a foundation that will support the remodeling of the headquarters, allowing us to serve as many as 132 children, including a nursery, a very rare case in the day-care centers of a very poor community such as ours. The extending of the services, for 2009, will create a positive impact, but support for our work remains vital in order for us to guarantee the quality of our services that we strive to reach for the children’s education. The participation of the guardians of the children is increasing significantly. This is fundamental to the support and encouragement of the guardian for the child to keep them in school and above all reach their individual potential abilities in school. Here we seek to involve everyone in the process of the child’s development. Starting with the family, the parents and the community, our technical team is the catalyst for ideas and practices that demonstrate better social, work and cultural relations. We have a mother that after attending our parenting lectures and having her child in attendance at our day-care center she changed the way she treated the education of her children. Today she understands that the day-care center is a right of the child and not of the mother. To study is one of the conditions to understand better and to make the practices more interesting. This is a result of the work that the social team conducts with the families. A project needs to have a clear objective. Above all we are in the process of discussion and execution of the activities so that these objectives are truly attainable. We need to know the demands of our target public, to recognize their needs and to plan systematic evaluations of the actions developed. We have recently made various alliances, principally in the field of education and we are having good results. We have an educator that is studying pedagogy and another that has returned to college. To guarantee the rights of the children and to involve the families are two of the goals of the day-care center. In this direction, the technique and child’s rights are the greatest potential that we have to meet this challenge. We are involving diverse actors together to reach this challenge so that our charges will have their rights guaranteed. The team of the Communitarian Day-care center Nova Holanda is grateful for the donations made through Global Giving and Dreams Can Be Foundation and also thanks you for the confidence you have in us, our work and our children. Our objectives are many. The challenges we face together and our growth is more effective than we know. The challenge is to work together and to instill into a transformation that we can believe in. To add the differences, the potentials and the capacity of each place and each member in its way can contribute directly to the guarantee of the education of the children.
