Update August 2008

1559 An Alternative to Child Prostitution and Begging “Sua Majestade o Circo” {Her Majesty’s Circus} thanks all the donors from Global Giving for their contributions and for the opportunity to elaborate on our new actions and conquests. Our project is continuing our activities, and in some cases, because of the collaboration and partnerships we have been able to expand attendance, goals and results to the young and their family of the Vila Emater II {– this is the place where the garbage of the city of Maceio - Brazil is dumped}. In 2008 we were able to firm up our non profit status and though this process has been a slow one, but with the help of the community we created a board of directors and with a donated house we were able to construct a headquarters of our own. Having our own space we can offer better service for the kids and their families. Our project won an award in 2008, the money that comes with this award will allow us to remodel and increase the size of the new space. Our project has become a reference in the fight against Child Labor, being invited by the “Ministério publico do trabalho”: {Minister of Labor} to go to attend conferences and participate in discussions regarding child labor and also children scavenging in the garbage dumps. Thanks again for your contribution! Your help is always welcome, we hope that you will continue to support our work through the Global Giving website.

{This is one of the neediest projects posted on Global Giving by Dreams Can Be Foundation, though it has gotten very little support here- if you have any questions whatsoever or would like to know more about this project please feel free to e-mail us at contact@dreamscanbe.org }

In 2007 Currently the project is serving 179 at risk youth, between the ages of 5 and 26 years old.

So far this year Sua Majestade O Circo has received two major awards for their accomplishments: Alagoas em Cena which was due to their outstanding performances in Maceió Imaterial (a circus show with cultural elements performed by kids from the project). And another prize of social action, Prêmio da Ação Social, which was awarded from Salada Magazine (this is a prize of a magazine that chooses the most esteemed actions in the state of Alagoas). In August – the project “O Teatro e a praça” {Theatre in the Square} {a project that is also posted on Global Giving and that brings healthy and educational messages through entertainment to an entire community} continued with the support of Dreams Can Be Foundation. This project brings the culture heritage of Northeast Brazil to the population, through performances made in an important square of Maceio In September - they performed at the most important theater in Maceio.

In October - They did circus workshops in a large Mall in Maceio, which generated revenues that went directly toward the infra-structure of the project In November - Sua Majestade O Circo helped with the campaign called “Trabalho infantil não tem graça” – (There is no enjoyment in a child’s labor) which raised awareness, and fought against the exploitation of children. {This is one of the most destitute areas of Brazil and this region in particular suffers from huge indices of child labor and child prostitution brought about by the extreme poverty. These projects bring healthy educational messages to an entire community and provide activities for children, keeping them out of these risky and extremely detrimental activities, while also increasing awareness of their value and raising their self-esteem.}

The company “Algás - Gás de Alagoas” was a recent Sponsor of Sua Majestade O Circo that gave the project money so that they could take the kids of Belo Horizonte to see the show Alegría of Cirque du Soleil -
