The International School is a collaborative effort between the Maison Shalom and the parents of the community of Ruyigi, Burundi. The school aims to provide an excellent education to the children of Maison Shalom and the surrounding community. In order to enhance the learning and development of the children, we ask for your support in providing educational and recreational infrastructures, including desks, books, computers, and a basketball and volleyball court.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Burundi, like neighboring Rwanda, was ravaged by civil war and ethnic violence in the 1990s, which killed around 300.000 people. Although the situation seems slightly improved, the country is still in very bad shape with one of the lowest per capita GDPs in the world. After the civil war, the education system was shattered, especially in rural areas. In Burundi, there is a critical lack of adequate education opportunities.
How will this project solve this problem?
The International School will provide an excellent, affordable education to the children of Maison Shalom and of Ruyigi. The school will fill the void of educational facilities left by the civil war, and will provide children with a comprehensive education that promotes the values of peace and self-reliance. By providing primary and secondary education, the International School will produce students who are well-prepared for the future.
Potential Long Term Impact
A joint effort between the Maison Shalom and the parents of the community, the International School emphasizes community collaboration and will foster a new generation of leaders with strong values and a commitment to social justice, who will be able to improve their own futures, as well as the future of their community. Having an excellent school in Ruyigi will stabilize the community and encourage more people to live and work in the area, adding to its growth and vitality over time.
