There is no doubt that Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) plays a vital role towards the cognitive and physical development of a child. The activities organized in ECDC through using various educational materials and games materials helps children to develop their brain along with increasing their socially networking skills. But, the ECDC’s being operated in various locations lacks proper facilities and enough educational materials in the centre, hence challenging the role of ECDC in child development. Hence, in order to extend our support towards ECDC, a day workshop on 3R (reduce, reuse and recycle) was conducted on 31st January 2015, Saturday in ECCA hall.
The workshop was organized to raise funds for supporting painting activities in an ECDC established in Shree Mahakaleshwor Primary School located at Chitpol-6, Sanga through the “Support -a-Child” Campaign. The workshop also intended to aware youths on 3R concept and to share the role of ECDC in child development and its contribution in our society. Through this workshop, we also deliberate to increase the role of youth and their contribution in community based social organization like ECDC.
The practical sessions like paper recycling, reusing and discussion on reducing paper waste during the workshop helped the youth participants towards understating multiple aspects of 3 R Concept. All the participants enjoyed making paper from paper pulp, paper basket and weaving paper bags on their own. The games played during the workshop helped the participants to get along with each other and create a harmonious environment among the participants. Ms. Toya Homa expressed “I loved how the entire program was operated with the 3R theme and for a social cause i.e. support a child campaign. Games were the biggest highlight of this workshop. Not only were they entertaining, it was also the perfect medium to break ice between the participants. I would love to be part of your program again.”
“I enjoyed the program till the end. I learned what actually can be done from the waste papers. The program was further made exciting through games and dance which gave us zeal throughout the program” said Mr. Suyash Shrestha.

It is an accepted fact that these days people totally rely on computer technologies for communication and acquiring information. It is often heard from the gossips of people around that printed materials usage are diminishing everyday due to advancement in information technology through computers. Also, students all around the world are found well equipped with individual laptops, personal computers and advanced gadgets. Even a decade ago, in the context of Nepal, technology had not taken its pace the way we are experiencing now. On one side, there is a remarkable improvement in information technology, for instance, the students of private boarding school, they are familiarized with English language and computer education right from the early age whereas the situation in government supported schools are not up to the level when compared with each other.
Without any biasness, the situation of education and the use of information technology is same as mentioned above in one of the government supported urban school - Shree Minnath Aadarsha Shikshya Sadan Lower Secondary School in Lalitpur District. But, through 'Support-A-Child” campaign being initiated by ECCA (Environmental Camps for Conservation Awareness), this situation of school is being facilitated to bring some positive changes. International Volunteer, Ms Anna Waters from England, initiated to create a microproject titled “Provide Six Computers for Nepali School Students” in order to overcome the technological barrier being created between the students and technology. The support being initiated in the school is believed to provide knowledge and skills on information technology education and computer education for the students of grade six, seven and eight. The computer distribution program in the school is going to be organized in 21st November 2014.
We strongly believe that this activity will definitely help the students in order to raise their computer skills and english education in the long run and eventually make them competitive to face any challenges not only in the national level but also in the international level which otherwise would be really very difficult in the world of technology and english speaking environment in today's context.

As part of the Support a Child campaign, a volunteer from England, Ms. Anna Waters has been conducting English language classes to school students in Lalitpur. Anna started her semi weekly classes at Shree Minnath Aadarsha Shikshya Sadan Lower Secondary School in April 2014. Every Monday and Tuesday, she goes to school at around 9 am and teaches English to the students in grades 6, 7 and 8. Since this school is a government-managed institution and classes are taught in Nepalese language, it was initially difficult for her to get through to the students and encourage them to learn the language. The students didn’t understood English, and were very shy to communicate with their new native English-speaking teacher. However, the children were quick to learn and have taken to their English classes with great enthusiasm.
In grade 7, where Anna has been teaching English, students are hard-working and dedicated to their studies. Pabitra is a particularly diligent student who puts in all her effort when doing her homework. Anna comments, “She is a very good student: she speaks very well and attempts to improve her English language skills. In fact, she is one of the top students in the class. And she strives for more. The spark in her eyes when she learns something new catches fire and there is nothing that can stop her from learning more then.”
Dacchina is another dedicated student. “All of her work is of a very high standard and she takes her work very seriously,” Anna shares. Ever since Anna came to teach, students like Dacchina and Pabitra have been improving their English rapidly. She feels that it is, ironically, partly due to the language barrier. “English is the only language we can communicate in so they have to make special efforts to make that possible,” Anna comments.
The students’ English classes have had positive effects on their other studies as well – students had been struggling with their computer education, which is mostly based in English. Since they started learning more about the language, however, they have been showing signs of improvement in their I.T. knowledge.
Unfortunately, despite the students’ best efforts to increase their I.T. skills, the school lacks the equipment which they need to be able to study effectively. The entire school has only four computers for around 150 students and only two of them are currently working. At least four children are forced to share one computer. This further complicates the situation, as now the enthusiasm of the children is suffering and their frustration is clear. As the students do not have computers at home, they are dependent on their I.T. classes to be able to learn the skills they will need for their future education and careers. Without sufficient computers at school, students are having great difficulty gaining these vital skills.
In response to this situation, Anna has initiated a micro project where she aims to raise US$2,000 to buy six computers for the school. The micro project’s name is ‘Provide Six Computers For Nepali School Students’, and it is being run in conjunction with ECCA’s ‘Support a Child’ campaign. Anna believes that this project will greatly help the students to continue improving in their studies and computer education.

On the 11th-13th April 2014 ECCA organized 3rd National Conference of Children’s Clubs in Kathmandu. The conference brought together 116 children from schools in 20 districts (out of 75 districts) of Nepal.
During the conference, students from different nature clubs were given the opportunity to participate in the Knowledge Marketplace, a funding competition in which students could present a proposal for the improvement of their school or wider community. Their proposals were presented to a panel of experts, who carefully selected six nature clubs to be awarded funding to help implement their proposed projects.
Students from Lalit Kalyan Kendra Lower Secondary School in Lalitpur, Kathmandu (who were assisted by the Support a Child campaign), were successful in achieving funding for their school. Their proposal was to install water taps in their school. The school is government run, and previously only had access to unclean water from a well. With the help of ECCA, however, the school has installed a tank and water is disinfected using WATASOL chlorine solution. Currently there is only one tap in the school which the students and teachers can use to access safe drinking water, which means that students have to spend a lot of their time queuing to use the tap, often when it is very hot outside. The funding grant which the students received will therefore be used to install three more water taps in the school, allowing students to access clean water more easily.
Bimala Tamang, 14, and Dhiroj Khadka, 13, were sponsored by the Support a Child campaign to attend the conference in order to present their proposal for installing the water taps in their school. Bimala explained that these taps will make a huge difference to the students in the school, and that it is also important in supporting the clean drinking water activities that the school is involved in, such as producing WATASOL chlorine solution from the WATA electro-chlorinator device.
“We feel very proud to have won the award”, Dhiroj explained. “Our school will have a good reputation in our community because of it”. This award will help to attract prestige to this government school, which struggles to maintain enrollment due to local students’ preference to attend private schools. Students come to this school from outside of Kathmandu and may not attend for more than a few months due to their parents being forced to relocate for work. This is disruptive to the students’ education; good publicity is therefore extremely valuable for attracting local students to the school.
The project to install the taps will be completed in a month, and after this the students at Lalit Kalyan Kendra Lower Secondary School will have easier access to safe drinking water.

Since the establishment of ECCA in 1987, it has been actively involved with establishing and mobilizing Nature Clubs / Child Clubs in schools towards environment conservation and protection. Children’s club are independent and voluntary groups within the schools, aiming to promote active participation of students in different learning process. ECCA pioneered the concept of children’s nature clubs in Nepal in 1992 and have been actively working with students through children’s club in different issues such as environmental conservation, sustainable development, health & sanitation, children’s rights and more.
With an objective to create an opportunity to learn, share and increase network with other nature clubs operating in different regions, ECCA had organized National Children’s Club Conference in past. The 1st conference was organized in the year 2000 and 2nd conference was organized in the year 2009. Hence, in order to create more platforms for the students for their exposure, we are preparing to organize 3rd National Conference on Children’s Club in the month of April.
The 3 days event from 11th April to 13th April will include various activities like plenary sessions by experts, Knowledge marketplace, Children’s Club Paper presentation, exhibitions from children clubs, games, presentation by students, documentary shows, environmental games etc. These activities will support to increase the knowledge of students along with the skills required to organize programs and activities through their clubs in days ahead.
Our Involvement in Yachhu Macha Pucha (Clean Child Group) as board members during our school days had contributed a lot in our knowledge, skill and leadership development. We had organized lots of community projects in our community during our participation in club and had been able to win the concept for promotion of Safe Water concept in Knowledge Marketplace during the 2nd National Conference.
