Give the Gift of LITERACY! Arts integration techniques are one of the most effective, meaningful and efficient methods for teaching literacy to a wide range of learning styles and levels. Our programs not only establish the building blocks for reading and writing, but also more importantly instill a passion for learning, powerful enough to change the course of a life. We will be able to reach hundreds more students, teachers and parents. Help us stop the illiteracy cycle today!
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Currently, 44% of elementary and 43% of secondary students in DC Public Schools are below grade level in reading. (2010 tests) According to a United Way study, illiteracy costs the US $20 billion each year. Educators are observing a wider range of reading levels in their classroom with a lack of assistance to help close the gap of understanding. Parents and students are facing a need so high that the programs available to them are insufficient.
How will this project solve this problem?
Research evidence is clear: the early years of life and school are critical to developing the skills and habits of literacy. Hearing and crafting stories through music, dance, and drama is an exciting way to increase vocabulary, introduce concepts, and gain an appreciation for books and the joy that comes from reading. Furthermore, residencies and performances that integrate the arts into the curricula reduce social tension in school by increasing student confidence and academic success.
Potential Long Term Impact
By working with students, parents and teachers simultaneously, we increase the sustainability of the program. After our team has left the school, the network of trained adults will continue to support and encourage teaching literacy through the arts. The reach of this project grows exponentially as these efforts are fostered long after our programs have concluded. Your donation will help to end the cycle of generations who cannot read or write.
